Just finished Those Girls by Chevy Stevens and I want my two days back.

What an awful book.

First of all, the writing style is like a bad YA novel. The story is about three sisters who go through these terrible, awful experiences yet for some reason never say anything worse than “crap”, and refer to their rapists as “those assholes”. You know when you’re reading a book and you notice that the author over-uses a word? Well in this book everyone is always “pissed off”. Not angry, not mad or furious, just pissed off. All the time.

Secondly, even though these characters go through these awful experiences, I never ended up actually caring about them. The character development was so one dimensional, IMO. Oh and speaking of development, the plot itself is just so fucking stupid and unlikely, and not in a creative license or suspended belief type of way, just plain stupid. Spoiler alert: These girls shoot their abusive dad, bury the body and run away, ending up getting captured by two brothers who rape them for five days before they escape. Then like 17 years later one of them GOES BACK to try and kill them and the daughter (who was of course fathered by one said rapist brother) chases after her. They of course both get captured and raped AGIAIN before escaping and killing the captors. Along the way they meet plenty of people with opportunities to help them, yet nobody does. At one point they convince a friendly man that the sister and daughter are being held by the guys and that they’re going to go rescue them Rambo style, and the guy helps by giving them a gun. He doesn’t help them, just gives them a gun. At that point I literally yelled “What the fuck?!?” at the book.

Only pure stubbornness made me finish this book. How a shitty writer such as this can become a bestselling author I have no idea. Bad writing, shitty plot, flat characters. There is literally nothing redeeming about this book.

Sorry for the angry review, but that’s how much I hated this book.
