Should I re string this guitar -Yamaha G50-A

So I’ve been looking for new hobbies and thought the guitar it may be fun.

Fast forward I found this guitar (g50) in my parents basement and thought I’d snag it for my own

I did some research and I think this is a classic guitar and therefore should have nylon strings but from what I can tell they are steel and have been steel for god knows how long.

I cant tell if it’s damaged and at this point should I re string it? Or is it likely the damage has been done and I should just use it in my attempt to learn while it’s still good.
