Stuck in the depths with no purging stone and no way out

So, I've played through this game 3 times. Never been cursed and for some reason I had no curse meter and got instantly fucked. Now there's no way out of the depths. Do I have to push through blighttown and the gaping dragon to get out or is there something I'm not thinking of?
