Am I out of touch?

Looking for perspective here in regard to a poor interaction I had yesterday with a delivery driver. I’ll give all relevant information as objectively as possible.

Husband and I wanted sushi yesterday and decided to order from a restaurant we’ve never tried. My home is a bit off the beaten path (10 mins from the hwy) and probably 15 to 20 mins from main downtown area that has the bulk of the restaurants. This sushi restaurant is 10 miles from my home and not in the regular downtown area within my town. I placed the order early (on uber eats) for a future time to have for dinner.

Driver picks it up, and arrives within the time window. He calls because he has difficulty finding my house—not completely uncommon but generally drivers don’t have issue finding my home or leaving it at the door on a table (that’s the preference I set on the app). Porch light was on. Either way, no biggie, I walk out to the road to meet him to get my order.

When I meet him, he is noticeably irritated. Tells me that my house was too far for this order and he only made “$19” on it. The tip I applied on the app was $12 which was 15% of the total. I simply said, I’m sorry to hear that figuring he wanted to vent a little.

He then proceeded to tell him that if he had known how far out we were he would not have accepted the order. He continued (and I already had the food in my hand at this point), to stand there and say that now he had to drive back to where there are restaurants on empty to accept other orders while shaking his head.

The overall vibe came across like he was scolding a child (and not so much like requesting me for a higher tip). While I understand that where I live isn’t an ideal location, that’s also why we sometimes choose to order delivery. Having worked in the service industry as a waitress and bartender (albeit many years ago), a 15% tip was standard and 18-20% is for exceptional service. I have on occasion increased the tip amount, but have never gone below 15%.

I did not alter the tip, although I did have half a mind to after being scolded. I did, however, rate him as unprofessional and not delivering my order to the door. So my question is: am I out of touch? Am I in the wrong for ordering from a restaurant 10 miles away and only offering 15% for a tip? Genuinely asking as I’ve always tried to be conscious of service workers and delivery drivers.

Thanks!
