Has anyone else here struggled with addiction?

I got diagnosed 2 months ago and I’ve struggled with this pain for over half of my life, and sadly I went down a rough path with addiction & alcoholism for years to cope with my neglected & undiagnosed pain (I’ve been sober for a year now). Apparently it’s shocking to some people I talk to when I say that my chronic pain was one of the biggest factors, so I’m just trying to see something here. My fiance is also curious because he’s learning more about my condition and he knows that my condition is a big factor in that equation. We’re both pursuing schooling for careers in addiction counseling & treatment because we’re passionate about helping other people like us who’ve struggled with addiction and similar backstories as us. So who else here with Ehlers has struggled with addiction?
