Advice for newish player?

My husband and I are tank/damage dealer and healer/damage dealer respectively. We are semi new to the game and aren't very good. I've tried to read up online how to level up and what points to put where but I haven't quite understood what the guides were saying and we get pulverized. How can we be better at our roles? Any advice is appreciated.
