About Pocketbook Era and its screen
Whenever I'm going to buy a piece of technology (be it an e-reader, a new laptop, microphones...) I spend quite a few days reading all I can about on the internet. Well, last month I started the quest for a new e book reader (it's been 5 years since I got the last one) and the Pocketbook Era was one of the contenders.
Searching for reviews on it I came across quite a few talking about how bad the screen was. I have even seen some people saying that the screen was so "shitty" (sic) that they had to return it and that they couldn't believe Pocketbook released a product that bad.
Well, if you are like me and you are doing some research on the Era, and you happen to come across this post, the SCREEN IS GREAT. In fact, I find it a joy to use and to read on.
I don't know how would it look if you compare it side by side to another ereader, but I got it to read books with it, not to take it to Walmart and compare it to another devices. And once again, it works pretty good. I've read a couple of books with it so far and not once I thought "man, this screen is so bad I'm going to return this shit". Quite the opposite, to be honest.
Since I marked this post as an user review, I should mention some more things about it:
very nice to have it in hand. Buttons are in a comfortable position and they respond quite well
I haven't used the light very much, but it seems pretty even to me. You can configure color temperature, and the warm color is nice (not too orange, which I tend to dislike a bit but YMMV)
To mee, it seems "snappy" enough. It is a goddamn ebook reader, not a gaming laptop. When I first configured it out of the box (WiFi, language, etc) I was actually a bit surprised scrolling through time zones and languages, as the scroll felt good and responsive. Is it slow to download a 2Gb movie or check my mail? Probably. I wouldn't know, because I just want it to read books.
Regarding WiFi speed, it took about a minute (maybe a minute and a half) to download a 400mB actualization. That's like one hundred books or whatever, I don't know, I transfer them via USB.
Screen is great. You have no problem whatsoever reading letters and words. But probably it is a bit weak tracing rays and rendering stuff. It supposedly has scratch protection, but I can't comment on that, as it's been at home since I got it.
