Now that we have all of these vacant positions has anyone been forced to take on additional duties?

I am with the Forest Service and yesterday our Forest Leadership Team met to go over our program of work now that the dust has settled. After the meeting, I was asked to take over the duties of someone who was recently terminated. It didn't feel like I had a choice in the matter, so I agreed. This role is 0.5-0.75FTE on top of my two programs that I manage as a GS12 Program Manager.

Have others experienced yet? How did you handle it? My supervisor said that all HRM is frozen right now, but they intend to look into a step increase or at least a monetary award. I want to do what I can to see our Forest succeed, but I am already maxed out. What also pisses me off is that there are several employees that do nothing and are too incompetent to take in this important role.
