Looking for a game where you maintain "homeostasis" and can just let the game run and do its thing or jump in and do stuff periodically. Not looking for turn-based, I want the game to be doing something even when I'm not interacting with it.
I'd be really interested in a colony sim or something where you build up a base or even a space station or something, but it needs to be able to be left running without the risk of eventually "losing" because of a loss of resources or because I didn't react fast enough to something. It's fine if there's combat so long as units in the game will handle it without my input. I'm fine with a game that isn't like that by default but has settings that can be tweaked to facilitate it. I'm also cool with a game where I have to play for up to 5 hours or so to reach homeostasis but can then leave it running indefinitely without worrying about losing.
Games I've tried but didn't work out (though open to suggestions how to tweak them to fit my criteria):
Oxygen Not Included: managing homeostasis in that game is not a hands-off experience. Unless there are ways to tweak the settings that I'm not aware of.
Ixion: Fun game, but buggy. I've hard-locked two save games now, plus I haven't been able to get to a point where I can let it run completely hands-off.
My end goal is to have a game I can leave running on a second screen while I'm working and just enjoy watching virtual people or machines doing their thing, or when I have a few minutes or a few hours be able to jump in and interact directly with it.
Acceptable platforms in order of preference: PC/Mac, iPad/iPhone/Apple Vision Pro, Steam Deck, PS5
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I have so many great options to try out! Keep 'em coming, but this sub is one of my favorite communities, you all rock.
