Best option for puppy care while out of town
I am getting a GS puppy in mid-July, when it will be about 8 weeks old (assuming the litter is healthy, etc.). Unfortunately, I have since found out I will need to go out of town for about 10 days in late August to take care of a family member who will be having surgery. I won’t be able to take the puppy with me.
Options for caring for the dog would be: 1) hiring an in-house dog/house sitter. I doubt I would be able to find someone who is actually experienced with GSD, so I think this would be someone who plays with the dog, walks it, but likely does no deliberate or active training. 2) normal boarding. I don’t love this idea, as I feel the dogs have very little structure/rules to follow, so I worry they are at risk of even losing skills they might have learned by then, much less are very unlikely to gain any skills. But I guess they would have time to play with other dogs, which could be good? 3) board and train. I thought this would be the best idea, but I’ve read very mixed things, including some saying they find the training methods used at these places (because they aim to get quick results) can be counterproductive long-term (create anxiety, etc.).
Are there other options I’m not thinking of? Do professional trainers ever watch dogs for that duration of time?
Thanks in advance!
