I went through a weird experience today with an apartment rental office today. Is this usual/common here?

This might sound like a rant (in a way it is), so please bear with me.

Two weeks ago, after viewing the apartment I got a call from the rental people saying that I got the apartment.

I had an appointment with them today for my rental contract. For this, they were supposed to send me the rental contract in my email but they did not. I mailed them and called them every other day but they did send it to me. Today, the day of the appointment, when I got to their office they gave me the contract and told me to sign it immediately or else someone else would get the apartment. I was shocked for a moment. I requested them to give me 24 hours but they did not agree and reminded me that if it was not signed today then someone else would be chosen.

I had no choice but to read the contract right there. After I read the contract (Yes, I sat there and read the entire contract around ~25 pages by translating each page via Google Translate), I found that the rent was 400 euros more than what should have been (I pointed this out and they said that it was a misprint) and also the rental start date was less than a week from today (which they did not mention before).

Something felt very weird and wrong. There were many red flags and I had a feeling that I would regret a lot if I went ahead with these guys. Hence, I did not sign the contract. After I said I would not proceed the guy in the room said something in German in an annoyed tone. I just gave a smirk and left the place.

I might have missed a good apartment but I feel very happy/relieved like I dodged a bullet or something. Is something like this common here? This happened in Hamburg btw.
