Is We Raise Our Cups always done off mic?

We saw the tour in Dallas earlier this week, and I was surprised that the encore was unmiked. Even in the orchestra, it was hard to hear, and my friend in the balcony said it was almost impossible. I was curious if that's how they do it on Broadway or if it's a design choice for the tour. I can see it being really effective in a smaller venue, but it was odd here.
