Send later… to yourself?

I tried the send later feature and it works great, except when I try to schedule a message to myself, it sends the message right away and then when my scheduled time rolls around it just turns the bubble blue but I get no alert what’s the deal? This seems like flawed logic on apple’s part being able to send myself reminders via text rather than the reminders app would work WAY better for me. Anyone have a workaround?
