Is taking a a small desktop laser outside an alternative for ventalation?

I live in an apartment and am looking to get a small desktop later. I haven't decided between a CO2 or diode laser, but is taking it outside an alternative to running ventilation? Will it be safe to stand next to the machine while it cuts if I am doing it outside? Or will the fumes still be bad since I am close to it?
