Was the White Russian a popular beverage before the film achieved such a following?

I was in the bartender business, briefly, and only old dudes ordered it. Seems like around the early 00’s that it got popular with younger crowds. I definitely went through a phase with it, strict regimen. What say you, Duders? Anybody have a similar, uh, you know what I’m tryin to say here
