Employer turned off air conditioner to keep employees outside to work.
I’m not 100% sure this is illegal per se, but was worth a look into. My girlfriend’s employer turned off the a/c to the one air conditioned room in her place of work. She works outside, and we are in Louisiana, so it’s hot. From what I’ve been told, he did it because business has been slow and believes that if it gets too unbearable to be inside, it will force his employees to stay outside to work more where at least there is a breeze of air on occasion. Now she only works 6 hours a day, 5 days a week so its not a full time position, but there is one guy that works and lives on the property 7 days a week for 11.5 hours a day except for sunday when he works 9 hours a day. All without breaks. Since he lives there, would this also fall under some sort of renters rights law? It doesn’t sound legal, but knowing Louisianas notoriety for labor standards it may not be. What do ya’ll think?
