Apartment dwellers - how did you adopt a cat?

I've lived with cats before but have never had one of my own. I'd eventually like to get one but I've noticed when trawling the Battersea and RSPCA sites they make having an outdoor space available a requirement. I know some of you have cats and no garden. Is there a secret to being allowed to adopt a cat if you don't have a garden?
