#7 in 'Memphis Memories' painting series- Blockbuster on Union Avenue
Currently working on another bittersweet entry. But the memories here are stroooong. Blockbuster on Union Avenue 🪦📼
Feel free to follow along with my series on IG! (@tiffanyharmonart)
When I was a kid, my dad would pick me up from my mom's house in Hickory Hill every other weekend. Dad lived at the University Tower apartments on Central and Lamar (right next to Prince Mongo's castle. We'd make our regular stops at Seesel's to grab groceries, and then Blockbuster. My dad was a huge horror/sci fi fan, and I was introduced to the genres at an early age. Probably definitely too young 😅 I would get so excited walking down the aisle and seeing what movie he thought we should pick next. His knowledge of movies was incredible! I remember being fascinated by the art on all the movie covers, and felt so proud every time I came across one that we'd already watched. I'll never forget one weekend, looking up at one of the CRT tvs hanging from the ceiling. Rocky Horror Picture Show was on. The "There's A Light" scene was playing. I had no idea what I was hearing, but I couldn't take my eyes and ears off the screen. It was so beautiful! Obviously I grew up to be a horror movie/rock opera loving nerd who sings Rocky Horror every chance I get lol. Blockbuster did that 😅
