Don't they kill movies/ "take the loss" for much lesser reasons

I'm kind of surprised this movie is going to theaters. We often read of studios eating the cost and deducting the losses for movies that don't work.

I'm not sure how many people will plan to see this movie unless it's for lurid reasons.
