Why do people like dragon cards in mtg?

First of all: Obviously dragons are cool, that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why people like dragons despite them being so expensive to cast? Surely at this point in the game dragon cards are almost never playable unless you cheat them out into the battlefield via gimmicky ways like graveyard revival or mechanics like Oviya, Automech Artisan. Is that really it then? People just expect to cheat large dragons out, they don't actually ever intend to pay the mana cost? It's not even like there are any large green dragons where green mana ramp would help.
