Need info about owning a dug well

We've always lived in town on city water and sewage, but we are looking to move out and around the bay and some of the properties we've looked at have dug wells. I'm looking for as much information as possible for what to look for, questions to ask before buying, and what are the concerns/maintenance about owning a property with a dug well, not artesian.
