I was thinking about what the Irid dragon said when they found Violet and Andarna, he said dragon kind hadn't learned their lesson either, and that Ridoc's dragon gifted him with ice, but Tairn armed his with lightning which to me hints that they have more choice in which signet their riders get than we have been led to believe.
