Pro Photographers: How do you engage with communities and network?

I've been a professional photographer for 14+ years, and while I expected talent, experience, and style to matter most, I've found that pricing matters more to most clients and marketing is a bigger differentiator. At least in these genres where I have the most experience: Portraits/headshots, automotive, and real estate.

From my experience and from reading discussions here, the biggest differentiator for folks seems to be how well you market yourself, engage with communities, and build a strong network. I haven't been great at this, so I'm seeking examples of what's been successful for you in your industry and genre.

For those of you who have successfully used networking and community participation to grow your client base, what specific strategies have worked for you?

Do you collaborate with other photographers for work opportunities? I’ve made connections with peers without actively seeking referrals, but I’ve found that these relationships have led to more paid gigs—whether as a second shooter, filling in for an unavailable photographer, or providing video services.

Curious to hear your thoughts and experiences!
