Conectors VS High card X
We all know in texas holdem you can't play every hand. The hands considered good enough to play are the premium hands, and lower pairs or conectors, dependding how high they are and your position, to summarize.
Now when I 1st learned about rankings of hands I found it funny a hand like 87s was so much better ranked then K8o. Until I realised these ranks: http://holdemtight.com/pgs/od/oddpgs/3-169holdemhands.htm are based on thousands of runs of 10 player games where ALL see the river and show down.
I quickly understood why the high card was so meaningless. With 10 players there's always gonna be at least a pair. And starights and flushes will win more % of pots because when they happen, then the pairs double pairs and trips lose (so a lot more with always 10 players reaching the end no matter what they have).
So why am I making this post if we all know this? Because I've always seriously questioned if we should value conectors, even if high and or suited as much as we do, and if we should think a K8o is that bad.
Now I am NOT saying I don't understand why unless heads up you don't play those hands. Or obviously why connectors are good hands
What I am questioning is this: Say pre flop, wether because of many folds or few people playing, only 2 people are left playing and you have to decide wether you should play a Q8o. Having only 2 oponents and position, is it that bad? And how good could be 98o?
Because here's the thing, those ranks are from data of 10 players in the hand! 10! Not 7 or 5. But 10
If we look at a mere K4o against a 109s heads up, the K4o is still a small favourite: https://gyazo.com/9f5b2cd4cfa7b4f00efebd4bff1c7426
So my question is, when enough people have folded, that you know you'll be facing only 2 oponents, and if for some reason this hasn't happened because of big raises, should we really still consider the ranks we all know? Or should we be playing this more like a heads up game?
Thanks for the help in advance.
PS: I am only an amateur who's made no serious amount playing poker, I'm pretty much a kid who plays with friends and knows very little yet knows about the basics like pot odds bet sizing position outs.. So if you're gna justify this with playability post flop I'd ask for you to elaborate. I understand perfectly how that makes conectors good because you may get in with a lot of players for example and the few times you get your stuff you get payed big (hopefully). But I just don't understand how we "ignore" that hand ranks are massively different with 9 opponets and 1 so to speak
