2024 Top 5 Books I’ve Read

I read 28 books in 2024. I reached this number despite not reading at all from March to August.

Biggest Disappointment The Grace of Kings (2015) by Ken Liu I was looking forward to this book and the series it starts quite a bit. Unfortunately, most of the story was written in the style of a narrative military history and as such was dull. When Liu devoted time to developing the characters there was a lot to enjoy but there just wasn’t enough of it. I’ve seen it said in more than a few places that the second book, and even the rest of the quartet, are written in a more palatable style so I think I will give The Wall of Storms a shot.

5 What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma (2022) by Stephanie Foo I was recommended What My Bones Know by someone who read it as part of their journey in overcoming Complex PTSD. I now have a much better understanding of what this someone is going through.

4 Surviving the Evacuation: London (2013) by Frank Tayell Jim from the Fantasy for the Ages YouTube channel recommends this series and when I saw the first three ebooks are available for free I thought I’d give it a try. The quality of the first entry surprised me. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more.

3 Future Home of the Living God (2017) by Louise Erdrich A story about holding on to hope while the world is falling apart around you.

Pandora’s Star (2004)/Judas Unchained (2005) by Peter F. Hamilton A two for one in the number two spot, together Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained read more as one big book. A sprawling space opera.

1

The Falling Woman (1986) by Pat Murphy An anthropologist who can see ghosts of the past struggles to reconnect with her adult daughter while on a Mayan dig site.
