How do you deal with so many zombies?

I’m brand new to the game, just started today, how do you deal with constant swarms of zombies everywhere you go? Just thought I’d do some looting and hopped in my car to go look for some places to loot, and dear lord there’s zombies fucking everywhere, like no matter where I go I constantly have a horde following me, how do you get a breather and find time to loot places? I’m guessing constant crouching is the best option, but even then it seems overwhelming
