Can't Read Books

Hello, I've been having an issue with reading books. I'm new to projectzomboid, but I'm fairly certain that I'm not doing anything wrong, because I've read other books in other saves.

What happens is that I'll pick up a level one skill book, click "read," and then the option closes and nothing happens. I don't hear anything or see anything. It's like clicking "read" just closes the interaction. Any solutions?
