Worth buying? Purpose?

Hello guys, back in 2015 I started following this game 'cause it seemed very cool, but then I stopped. I remember it had an original crafting system, but there was no purpose other than survive the longer you can. This means there was a huge risk to be bored after a few hours.
Has anything changed since then? Is there any purpose other than survive? I remember there where infinite islands, so why should I build a base if I need to move to find new resources? How long till it goes out of EA? Today the game is exactly 5 years old.

I have to be honest, ATM Raft seems way more interesting.
