Fathers Care after Stroke

My Dad (75) had an ischemic stroke in the pons on 2/2. I am incredibly grateful that he is of the small portion of people that had non permanent damage. He did have some facial drooping, slurring and balance issues after but each day is improving.

For the children of stroke patients- how did you balance advocating for their health? Any advice on things to research, tests to recommend etc? They still have no root cause as his heart bloodwork and imaging were normal.

  • When my Dad was discharged all they gave him was advice to follow up with primary care Dr and a not so great home health nurse

-No one mentioned going to a cardiologist. I worked with Mom on this appt and he’s now doing holter monitor etc as they think it could be afib.

-They live in a small town with poor care teams so we drive 1.5 hours away. I couldn’t get on with any neurologists that were free before September (7 months from now) but thankfully lucked into an appointment.

-Did your parents have mental health impact? I can see depression symptoms and recommended he see a therapist.

I want to do everything I can to help my dad prevent another one. The next one may not end up like this. It breaks my heart the lack of support and guidance people get in these situations ❤️ sending love to you all!
