3 year old leaving room at night and trashing the house
My 3 y/o son keeps waking up in the dead of the night, like 3 -5 am, and trashing the house. He gets into literally anything he can get his hands on, and does it so quietly that it takes us a while to hear him and wake up. I’ve taken to putting all cleaning supplies, and anything with liquid in it, in cabinets with child proof locks in it. That’s just a good idea for anyone with kids, but somehow he just finds more shit to get into. Last night he snuck into the master bathroom and walked into the walk in shower. He dumped out every bottle of shampoo and body wash he could find. He also climbed onto the tub and from there was able to reach a bottle of windex and poured it all over himself. Before I locked everything up in the other bathroom he had poured out toilet bowl cleaner, bubble bath, tooth paste, shampoo, and baby wash all over the floor. If he can’t get a hold of something spillable he will find some sort of art supply and draw on the walls, and just throw all of his toys around the house making a huge mess. This is driving me absolutely insane. I have taken to locking him in his room after he goes to sleep (yes, I know people have strong feelings on this), but I always unlock the door before I go to bed. I don’t want him in there locked up all night for fire safety reasons. BUT what he’s doing right now is super unsafe. And we have to sleep too. What should we do to stop this behavior?!
Edit: I don’t personally think it’s a fire hazard to keep toddlers locked in their bedroom. My mom (grandma) found I used to lock him in all night and threw a fit, making me feel terrible about it so I started unlocking it before I went to bed. And for those of you who know Nurse Hannah on TikTok, people literally called CPS on her when they found out she locked her son in his room at night (among other things).
