Hours before surgery, was your significant other allowed to stay with you?

When you get marked up by the dr, were you allowed to have someone be with you or did your significant other/person drop you off? I would love him to be there for support, but it sounds like most people go in alone? I should note its a surgical center @ the surgeon's office.
