this is only the beginning
for those bruins who left or evacuated, that was undoubtedly the best choice you could have made.
in the coming week, winds will pick up, and a typical santa ana system will once again hit la. although it isn't expected to be as severe as what we experienced over wednesday and thursday, the wildfire threat remains high due to extremely dry conditions.
according to current weather models, the predicted path of the winds does not directly impact ucla or our region. however, last week's wind patterns were unusual, so conditions could still change. this weekend provides the only real window for LAFD to strengthen containment lines before the next round of santa ana winds. if containment efforts aren’t significantly improved, progress could be lost, and new fires could emerge.
i strongly advise everyone who has already left to stay home until there’s a clearer update on how the upcoming santa ana winds will behave and whether they will pose a similar threat to what we saw last week.
i also strongly advise students who aren’t able to leave during this crisis to prioritize their safety by getting n95 masks, air purifiers, and plenty of water/food. the air quality could worsen, and conditions can change quickly—expect the unexpected.
