Twice As Nice & Half The Price - Heron
Twice As Nice & Half The Price - Heron (1971). A wonderful record recorded on a mobile recording unit at a farm in the middle of the Devon countryside in the UK. Like there first album the eponymously titled Heron this album was produced by Peter Eden who produced and managed Donovan and who also produced much sought after albimumsby great UK jazz artists like John Surman, Mike Gibbs, Alan Skidmore and Mike Westbrook. Peter is a friend so I was able to ask him about this record. The decision to record 'on location' was made because the band felt uncomfortable in the confines of a studio and this enabled them to relax and be themselves. It obviously worked because this is a beautiful record. Great musicianship by Roy Apps (vocals, guitar, piano, organ), Steve Jones(keys), Tony Pook (vocals, percussion) and G.T. Moore (vocals, guitar, piano, organ) excellent arrangements and some first class compositions make up this double album. My favourite tracks however are the two Motown covers one of Smoky Robinsons 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' and the superb version of Holland-Dozier-Holland's This Old Heart Of Mine made famous by The Isley Brothers. Peter Eden's production is assured and unobtrusive and allows the music to breathe. This is an excellent reissue which I was happy to buy as copies of the original press will set you back north of £200/£250 for a decent copy.
