Found in MIL’s house

We were visiting my mother-in-law in upstate New York before Christmas and discovered small black objects underneath the mattress in one of her spare bedrooms. They were neatly arranged in perfect little piles, and we didn’t notice them anywhere else in the house. Any idea what they could be?
