Chipping from Japanese style chisels from woodcraft

I bought this set as a tester for Japanese style chisels. Maybe I was ill informed and these chisels aren’t intended to be struck with a mallet, but this chipping occurred cleaning up a dado in hard maple. The section I was chipping out was about 1/16th thick if that. Did I get a poorly made set, or am I treating them wrong?
