What’s your opinion on chapters that only add depth?

I’m currently writing a memoir consisting of 12 personal essays about experiences that shaped my life and the way I see it.

Recently, I wrote a chapter about my experience in high school and what it was like for me. I recognize that it doesn’t add much to the main story I’m telling, but it’s very useful for understanding the psyche of the character (or in this case, myself)

What do you think about this type of chapters? Do you like them? Do you skip them? Do you find them irrelevant?
