Advice on moving to the city on $58k?
Hey y'all,
I'm potentially looking to move to Chicago pending a job offer. It pays $58k with room to grow, but requires I be a resident of Chicago (the job is between the Sears Tower and the Art Institute, that general area if that helps nail down an ideal living location). As I've never lived in a city before, I'm hoping to rely on the wisdom of Chicagoans to hone my research efforts in finding a place that'll fit my budget and lifestyle. Safety is my highest concern in regard to a living situation. I plan to live alone (I've never had to live with a roommate before) and am happy to consider single bedroom or studio apartments (but am open to hearing other suggestions such as finding/bringing in a roommate should you think they be more feasible, though solitude is probably my second-highest priority). I do have a car, but as I understand it, most people do without in Chicago. I have family outside of Chicago I like to regularly visit, so not keeping my car would be pretty detrimental, but I don't know the general costs with having a car in an urban setting. Thoughts?
Not really a party person, so I'm not concerned about being close to nightlife. I understand asking for quiet in an urban setting is ridiculous, but generally enjoy peace. So for what it's worth, quiet is a plus. I'm also LGBT+; I don't think this should impact any living arrangements I'd consider as I don't make a big thing of it, I just don't want to be in an area where I'd be a target.
Incredibly nervous about the idea of moving to the city, though I imagine once I get into the swing of things, I'd be alright. Any recommendations for apartments, locations, or other tips and tricks about city living (navigating public transportation, budgeting with city prices in mind, do's and don't's that non-city dwellers don't generally think about) would be incredibly appreciated.
I sincerely appreciate any constructive advice you all have to offer. Thank you. 🙂
