Advice on moving to the city on $58k?

Most people in Chicago have cars, but most people posting on here probably don't. This subreddit skews young and Northside.

Primarily Rockford, but temp located in DeKalb for college. Graduating in May and have a few potential interviews I'm hopeful about. The one in Chicago is tempting because of the growth that'll come in time, but nothing is set yet. I'm just trying to collect information preemptively should I decide to go that route. If it doesn't pan out, I still have the advice should something else present itself in the area.

Psshh most places in Chicago are nicer and safer than Rockford or DeKalb.

To be fair, I lived in uptown Rockford, near the corner of Mulford and E. State. But between here and DeKalb, I've not been terribly fazed by crime in those areas. So if that's the case, I may adapt well.
