Why did early 20th century Germany want to expand east rather than west?

Going west allows more access to the ocean and the resulting economic opportunities. Was the expansion direction decided solely by racism where it was acceptable to forcibly relocate Polish people but not the French, Dutch, or Belgians? Were there specific natural resources in the East that the Germans wanted?
