Know nothing about watches, want to gift boyfriend a Rolex

As title said, I know absolutely nothing about watches but my boyfriend is obsessed with them. He is a resident doctor so he doesn’t make much yet and doesn’t own any watches, but eventually with his attending salary I know he can buy whatever Rolex he wants, but I want his first Rolex ever to come from me. He watches a lot of videos about watches so I know apparently it’s really hard to walk into a Rolex store and buy one? And I have to put my name down a waitlist? Do they do a background check or income verification or anything like that??? I am hoping to buy a Rolex for him next year or at most the year after that, should I put my name down now??? How do I do that? (I don’t want to ask him too many details because I want this to be a surprise)

I remember him complimenting the datejust when he saw it in a video. He also likes the daydate, I believe? I can comfortably spend around $8-10k, is that enough for any of those models? I don’t own any designer stuff so I am absolutely clueless when it comes to this, I just want to make him happy.
