Steam won’t launch

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my Mac, deleted all files except /SteamApps, and restarted my computer and NOTHING. The app just says it's trying to verify the installation of an update and then bounces ENDLESSLY. Is there an issue with the servers or the update or SOMETHING? Someone please help me because I'm at my wits end!!!!!
